HP Sharpens Blade Management
By David Utter
The company's acquisition of RLX Technologies gives HP a boost to its blade server management tools.
HP announced it would acquire the Spring, Texas firm RLX. The company makes a Linux-based management software package called RLX Control Tower, used for managing multiple blade servers. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Already the owner and distributor of a variety of server and storage management tools, HP will add RLX to its enterprise management product line. The RLX software suite now gives HP a presence in environments where Linux figures prominently.
Blade servers have found interest in businesses that have limited space for data equipment but need a lot of servers to run the firm. The smaller footprint occupied by blade servers allows a number of them to be stored in a single rack.
HP has been on a bit of a buying binge recently. The company announced purchases of AppIQ and Peregrine last month.

Peregrine makes asset and service management software; AppIQ produces a storage management product, and HP has been moving to build a bigger presence in the growing storage market.
