10.16.08 SysAdmin Caught With Crazy Amount Of Stolen Equipment By Doug Caverly We've talked a lot about data theft in recent months, and now a mention of hardware theft seems worthwhile. It turns out, you see, that a system administrator managed to take 19,709 items from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. That's a stunning number, right? The dollar value assigned to the stuff - around $120,000 - is also gulp-inducing. It brings to mind the idea of some master thief, or worse yet, someone selling everything to a less-than-friendly nation. The reality of the situation isn't so dramatic, though. While the equipment should have filled a garage or three - "Papagno stole more 100 desktop computers, nearly 7,000 pieces of computer storage media, over 80 computer monitors and hundreds of other items such as laptops, hard drives, peripherals, external storage devices, printers, power backups and software," according to Jaikumar Vijayan - it seems like a type of preemptive dumpster diving was taking place. Vijayan writes, "According to a source knowledgeable about the case, much of what Papagno took was old and obsolete equipment that would have been otherwise junked, although newer items were a part of the mix, too." And Papagno used a lot of the stuff over a period of ten years, while giving some of it to friends and family members. Anyway, Papagno has now accepted a plea agreement that will put him in jail for between 12 and 18 months. It seems like system administrators and companies everywhere might want to consider looking up and/or adjusting equipment disposal procedures as a result.
