12.15.09 SysAdmins Weigh In With New Survey By Doug CaverlyInformation regarding who's doing what is very popular; you can look at the abundance of news outlets, the existence of Twitter, or any number of other things as proof. And now, for system administrators (and system administrators' bosses), the results of a new survey should provide insight into the norm. Trusted Computer Solutions recently contacted 100 different system administrators. With respect to their organizations' highest priority for 2010, 73 named the concept of virtualization. Also, a whopping 95 said that they intend to invest in Linux systems in the future. Yet 43 percent said that the integration of new technologies presents the greatest challenge. As for some other details, process streamlining is becoming common, with more system administrators experiencing it than budget reductions or personnel cuts. Regular reviews of audit logs were identified as the most effective ways to prevent unauthorized attacks. Finally, 48 of the system administrators said that they spend most of their time responding to problems as opposed to installing, maintaining, or upgrading servers, or writing programs to automate tasks. Sherryl Dorch, the vice president of marketing for Trusted Computer Solutions, explained in a statement, "We hope that the findings from our roundtable and survey offer C-level executives with some visibility on how systems administrators perceive their roles and the challenges they face supporting their organizations."
