04.15.10 IPad Apps Prove Useful To System Administrators By Doug CaverlyApple didn't really hold back when promoting the iPad; the company went so far as to call the device "magical and revolutionary" in a press release - twice. It would make sense, then, if the iPad could meet all sorts of needs, and it can indeed help system administrators in more than a single way. No one's suggesting that system administrators should do away with their desktop setups and just wander around with an iPad tucked under one arm. More time's needed for new apps to be released and existing apps to be polished, and even assuming that's all perfected, battery life problems could still present themselves. Still, Paul Venezia's finding the iPad and the current selection of apps useful. He recently wrote, "I've been using iSSH on my iPhone and iPod Touch seemingly forever. Several times over the past few years, it's saved my bacon when I was out and about and received distress calls from servers. . . . With the iPad, the text input problem isn't nearly as severe, and I've found the iSSH client to be very usable."
Venezia's a fan of Desktop Connect, too, adding with respect to it, "Desktop Connect will connect to Windows systems with RDP, Linux systems with VNC, and Mac OS X systems as well. There's a very simple interface that shows the remote desktop below an icon bar that allows you to pop up the keyboard and Control, Alt, Shift, and Windows keys, as well as arrows and function keys. Tapping the mouse icon shifts the click from right to left. Desktop Connect also leverages the iPad's multitouch interface to allow pinch zooming of the desktop, so you can size it however you like it." And finally, with respect to monitoring, iStat is Venezia's app of choice, offering about as much compatibility and pertinent info as a person could want. So system administrators who would like to justify the purchase of an iPad to their bosses might do well to arm themselves with this information. Just stay away from the words "magical and revolutionary" while making the pitch, since they still sound more than a overenthusiastic. About the Author: Doug is a staff writer for WebProNews.
