System Administrators Still Not Crazy About SSDs By Doug Caverly Staff Writer Article Date: 2009-04-09 The average system administrator is probably quite used to hearing about all sorts of great technologies he should embrace. This week, let's try something new and instead talk about one he (maybe) shouldn't: solid-state drives. Solid-state drives have several things going for them: startup and access speed, mechanical reliability, and lack of noise, for starters. Plus, just by virtue of being new, they've gained a sort of automatic aura of coolness. Solid-state drives remain expensive, though, and have a limited capacity compared to traditional drives. There are also questions about their long-term reliability. All in all, system administrators tend to be holding off. Beth Pariseau talked to tech guys at the City of Altamonte Springs, Storage Networking World, the University of Utah Hospital, and Microsoft who are sitting back while the technology matures. Representatives of LSI, Seagate, and IBM, were willing to discuss flaws, too. So try not to go head over heels for the new tech, and be sure to run some tests if you think it's at all right for your company.
