Windows 7: Fast Enough For You?

The recent release candidate of Windows 7 is still the buzz. If you're like me, one thing that you're very concerned about in a new operating system is speed. Is the thing going to be fast enough?
In a recently-released report, PC World shared the results of their speed test of Windows 7. They used three computers in the test. First, they clocked each computer running Vista. Then, after compiling the data, they installed the Windows 7 RC and ran comparative performance tests.
The bottom line? Windows 7 was indeed faster in each case, but not in a noticeable way. "Noticeable" for PC World would be a speed increase of greater than 5%. Beyond 5%, average computer users like me would notice a pleasant decrease in the time that it takes to do hard-drive heavy tasks. Below 5%, the speed increase is not significant enough to get excited about.
Moments after the release of PC World's report, comments appeared suggesting that the test results do not hold true to the user experience. In other words, many who are using the new operating system are enjoying faster performance-or they think they are. So, maybe it's not a big deal after all. Admittedly, an operating system improvement is not exclusively about better speed. However speed is important. What do you think? Does Windows 7 pass or fail? Does it disappoint? Does it merit the hype?
