It used to be that all a system administrator had to deal with in terms of new, unapproved technology was someone bringing in a CD to listen to at work. These days, a new and potentially dangerous technology releases every month. As a system administrator, these new technologies can pose all kinds of threats to networks, and computer systems.
The best advice which can be given to these worrisome sysadmins is to simply relax. Only focus on the problems within your control. You could turn into a ruthless dictator when it comes to people utilizing new technology, but this benefits no one. Especially yourself.
William Jackson has crafted a wonderful article, and makes a great comparison toMordac from the Dilbert comic.
Unisys' CISO Patricia Titus claims the company is embracing these new technologies, and trying their best to catch up, "It's quite onerous." She continues, "Consumers are driving us in the enterprise to think outside the box."
Unisys, along with a host of other companies are starting to adopt use policies which encompass consumer related products such a smartphones, iPads, and other related devices.
When coming to a decision whether to allow certain devices, an untested yes or no doesn't suffice. Learning products, and speaking with employees about their uses is what is needed to make a constructive decision.
Finding the balance between openness and security is what sysadmins and other professionals get paid to do. In these times, the strategy of keeping everything off limits is too draconian to be effective. Learning and understanding are the key ingredients moving forward.
