Last Friday Of July

System administrators everywhere know what the last friday of July is. All the rest of the year, we spend our time getting the infrastructure to behave in an orderly manner. Most of us system administrators often get treated as though we only keep the Internet up, and the replacement hardware and software installed. However, for the past eleven years people have been trying to bring more recognition to the plight of the SysAdmin by designating the last friday in July as System Administrator appreciation day. A day to engage the system administrators you know, without having a problem that needs to be fixed first.

The twelfth annual SysAdmin Day in 2011 is on the last Friday of July, the 29. Among private, individual office appreciation, many organizations and stores are offering special discounts and prizes to be won from contests. LOPSA, the League of Professional System Administrators, is offering a discount on LOPSA membership. Thinkgeek is having a SysAdmin Pageant where you vote on and enter a chance to win some great prizes. Several cities are hosting events as well, sponsored by companies such as Bitly in New York City and OpenDNS in San Francisco. Companies and organizations everywhere are showing their appreciation by offering discounts and throwing events for system administrators, perhaps your organization also will.

On most days the system administrator goes unnoticed until something breaks or works out of order, but even then the system administrator is sought to blame. If you are a manager or Chief Officer of something and you oversee a system administrator, the last friday of July is a moment set aside to truly show how much you need the system administrator, without there being a fire that he or she has to put out. Show your love for SysAdmin on the last friday of July by showering him or her with lavish gifts; trust me, as a SysAdmin, we accept gifts though grudgingly. Take time to show you care. And if you are a SysAdmin take note of who does not wish you a happy day.
